Meatloaf sub

Meatloaf sub with caramelized onions, and brown gravy
Ingredients:

For the Meatloaf:

1 lb ground beef
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup milk
1 egg
1/4 cup diced onion
1/4 cup diced green bell pepper
1/4 cup diced celery
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
For the Caramelized Onions:

2 medium onions, thinly sliced
2 tbsp butter
1 tsp sugar
Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Brown Gravy:

2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 cup beef broth
Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Sub:

4 hoagie rolls
4 slices of provolone cheese
Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, diced onion, diced green bell pepper, diced celery, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well until everything is evenly combined.

Form the mixture into a loaf shape and place it in a baking dish. Bake for 45 minutes or until the meatloaf is fully cooked.

While the meatloaf is cooking, start caramelizing the onions. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onions, sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.

Once the meatloaf is cooked, remove it from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Slice it into four equal pieces.

In the same skillet used for the onions, make the brown gravy. Melt the butter over medium heat, then whisk in the flour until it forms a paste. Slowly pour in the beef broth while whisking continuously. Cook until the gravy thickens, about 5-10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

To assemble the subs, place a slice of provolone cheese on each hoagie roll. Top with a slice of meatloaf, a spoonful of caramelized onions, and a drizzle of brown gravy. Serve immediately.
