Hamburger Steaks with Brown Gravy, Homemade Mashed Potatoes, and Stir-Fried Cabbage Recipe

Ingredients:

For Hamburger Steaks:

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil for frying

For Brown Gravy:

  • 4 packs of brown gravy mix (or homemade if preferred)
  • Water (according to package instructions)

For Homemade Mashed Potatoes:

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For Stir-Fried Cabbage:

  • 1 small cabbage, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon creole seasoning
  • Optional: 1/2 lb sausage, sliced

Instructions:

Hamburger Steaks:

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix until well combined.
  2. Form the mixture into patties.
  3. In a skillet over medium-high heat, heat vegetable oil. Add the hamburger patties and sliced onions.
  4. Cook the patties until browned on both sides and cooked through. Remove patties from the skillet and set aside.

Brown Gravy:

  1. Prepare the brown gravy mix according to the package instructions (or make homemade if preferred).
  2. Pour the gravy over the cooked hamburger steaks in the skillet. Simmer for a few minutes until the gravy thickens.

Homemade Mashed Potatoes:

  1. Boil the diced potatoes in a pot of salted water until tender.
  2. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
  3. Mash the potatoes and add milk, butter, salt, and pepper. Continue mashing until smooth and creamy.

Stir-Fried Cabbage:

  1. In an electric skillet or large pan, melt butter over medium heat.
  2. Add minced garlic and sautΓ© until fragrant.
  3. Add shredded cabbage (and optional sausage) to the skillet. Stir-fry until the cabbage is tender but still has a bit of crunch.
  4. Season with creole seasoning and adjust salt and pepper to taste.

Serve:

  • Plate the hamburger steaks with brown gravy on top.
  • Serve alongside a generous scoop of homemade mashed potatoes.
  • Add a portion of the stir-fried cabbage on the side.
