Mamaw’s Hearty Bean Burger

Servings: 4-6

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 can (16 oz) pork and beans
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Buttered bread, mashed potatoes, or fried potatoes for serving
  • For mashed potatoes: instant mashed potatoes (follow instructions on package)
  • For corn: corn kernels, butter

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Bean Burger Mixture:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, pork and beans (including the sauce), brown sugar, ketchup, and yellow mustard.
    • Season with salt and pepper according to your taste preference.
    • Mix everything together until well combined.
  2. Form Patties:
    • Take handfuls of the mixture and form them into burger-sized patties. Ensure they are firmly packed to hold their shape during cooking.
  3. Cook the Bean Burgers:
    • Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat.
    • Cook the patties for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and cooked through. Ensure the internal temperature reaches at least 160ยฐF (71ยฐC).
  4. Prepare the Sides:
    • While the bean burgers are cooking, prepare the sides. Prepare the instant mashed potatoes according to the package instructions.
    • Cook the corn kernels on the stovetop with butter until they are tender and lightly browned.
  5. Serve:
    • Once the bean burgers are cooked, serve them hot alongside the mashed potatoes and corn.
    • Optionally, serve with buttered bread or fried potatoes for a hearty meal.
