Beef and Gravy over Mashed Potatoes Recipe

Ingredients:

For the mashed potatoes:

  • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 4 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

For the beef gravy:

  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups water
  • 10 beef bouillon cubes or packets
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the ground beef:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Mashed Potatoes:
    • In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add quartered potatoes and cook until fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes.
    • Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add butter, sour cream, minced garlic, salt, and pepper.
    • Mash the potatoes until smooth using a potato masher or whip them with a hand mixer until creamy. Keep warm.
  2. Make Beef Gravy:
    • In a separate saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
    • Gradually whisk in the flour to create a roux. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture turns golden brown and has a nutty aroma, about 2-3 minutes.
    • Slowly pour in water, whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Continue whisking until the mixture thickens.
    • Add beef bouillon cubes or packets and continue whisking until fully dissolved and the gravy reaches your desired consistency. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Cook Ground Beef:
    • In a skillet, cook ground beef over medium heat until browned and cooked through. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  4. Assemble:
    • Serve a generous portion of mashed potatoes onto each plate.
    • Spoon the cooked ground beef over the mashed potatoes.
    • Ladle the rich beef gravy over the beef and mashed potatoes.
    • Garnish with freshly ground black pepper or chopped parsley if desired.
    • Serve hot and enjoy the delicious simplicity of this comforting meal!
