Beef and Gravy over Mashed Potatoes Recipe
Ingredients:
For the mashed potatoes:
- 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and quartered
- 4 tablespoons butter or margarine
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
For the beef gravy:
- 1/4 cup butter or margarine
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 cups water
- 10 beef bouillon cubes or packets
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the ground beef:
- 1 pound ground beef
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Prepare Mashed Potatoes:
- In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add quartered potatoes and cook until fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes.
- Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add butter, sour cream, minced garlic, salt, and pepper.
- Mash the potatoes until smooth using a potato masher or whip them with a hand mixer until creamy. Keep warm.
- Make Beef Gravy:
- In a separate saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
- Gradually whisk in the flour to create a roux. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture turns golden brown and has a nutty aroma, about 2-3 minutes.
- Slowly pour in water, whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Continue whisking until the mixture thickens.
- Add beef bouillon cubes or packets and continue whisking until fully dissolved and the gravy reaches your desired consistency. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Cook Ground Beef:
- In a skillet, cook ground beef over medium heat until browned and cooked through. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Assemble:
- Serve a generous portion of mashed potatoes onto each plate.
- Spoon the cooked ground beef over the mashed potatoes.
- Ladle the rich beef gravy over the beef and mashed potatoes.
- Garnish with freshly ground black pepper or chopped parsley if desired.
- Serve hot and enjoy the delicious simplicity of this comforting meal!
