Tonight was a simple dinner. Growing up my mom and grandma always made their Swiss steak this way.
I took my steak and cut it into smaller pieces ( it was 2 huge pieces) it was 5 lbs total.
Used 2 packets of onion soup mix
4 cans stewed 🍅 ( I like extra sauce)
Browned my steak in skillet, just until the outside was done, removed and put in a baking dish, added the onion soup mix, topped it with the stewed tomatoes I crushed up. Cooked for 1 1/2 hrs on 350( It came out perfectly tender)
I served with corn and instant home style buttered potatoes.

Grandma’s Hearty Swiss Steak Surprise

Ingredients:

  • 5 lbs beef steak, cut into smaller pieces
  • 2 packets onion soup mix
  • 4 cans stewed tomatoes
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Corn, for serving
  • Instant home style buttered potatoes, for serving

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the Steak: a. Cut the large steak into smaller, manageable pieces. b. Season the steak pieces with salt and pepper. c. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. d. Brown the steak pieces in the skillet, cooking just until the outside is seared. Remove from the skillet and transfer to a baking dish.
  3. Create the Flavor Base: a. Sprinkle the onion soup mix evenly over the browned steak pieces. b. Crush the stewed tomatoes and pour them over the steak, ensuring an even distribution of tomatoes and juice.
  4. Bake to Perfection: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 1 1/2 hours. This slow cooking will make the steak tender and infuse it with the rich flavors of the onion soup mix and stewed tomatoes.
  5. Serve with Sides: While the Swiss steak is baking, prepare your sides: a. Cook corn according to your preferred method. b. Make instant home style buttered potatoes as per the package instructions.
  6. Plate and Enjoy: Once the Swiss steak is done, remove it from the oven. Serve the tender steak over a bed of buttered potatoes, with a generous ladle of the flavorful sauce. Add a side of corn to complete the meal.

Optional Tips:

  • For added depth of flavor, you can sauté some onions and garlic before browning the steak.
  • Experiment with different varieties of stewed tomatoes, such as those with added herbs or roasted garlic, to customize the dish to your taste.
  • Garnish the finished dish with fresh herbs like parsley or thyme for a burst of color and freshness.

Enjoy this hearty Swiss steak dinner that pays homage to the traditions of your mom and gradnma!
